There is a lot of talk in this blog about the decline of music quality today. We have outlined several factors such like globalization and the mass media production, the technology booming, the way music is promoted, the record labels etc…
We accept that the majority of popular music today is not as meaningful comparing to the music of the 80s, 70s etc and it seems that a lot of people will agree with this statement, however there will still be a percentage of those who may have a different opinion.
We have added this poll in order to get a flavor of what people think about this issue.
We reccomend also to use the comment form and tell us more of what you really believe.

i would say that the mainstream music of the 80′s was entirely better than the mainstream music of today. However there is great music out currently which is not mainstream, you just have to know how to look for it. I am not aware of any hard to find music of the 80′s so i can’t compare it to the uncommon music of today.

i like both era’s (80′s/now) because they both have their high points: 80′s rock had better guitar solos. but new stuff has a different(modern, of course) feel to it making it a lot more jumpy, especially aternrock and industrial. my favorite example of this is chaotica. unstable. great song

My personal Music time is the 1970′s just cause Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall came out in the 70′s all by Pink Floyd

I think if you try to look deeper than the mainstream bands there is a lot of good music to be found!!!

Love the subject matter of this post! Have been thinking about this a lot lately. Culturally right now we are obsessed with our vampires and our secrets and a need to be different and whatever we do we have to be edgy. Our music is no exception (pop with an edge, r&b with an edge, country… you guessed it, with an edge!)
So the real question could be.. is our culture as good as the past? Becuase whatever we are doing culturally, will definitely be reflected in our music.

Thanks for your vote and your time.
I agree with you somehow. Of course our music has to do with our culture but what sort of “culture” we have today when the whole society is like a big brainwashed cattle. We all do what the media say, we buy what they want, we are doing as we are toldk, conformity, apathy and passiveness.
I’m not saying there are is no good music today. For me it looks like we are walking towards a dead end. We know what is wrong but we don’t react at all. The truth is in front of us. We have ended up consume machines rather than free human beings.

today’s mainstream is too conforming and cookie-cutter. Have we really discovered all the music styles available? Everything just seems to be regurgitated.

I believe music in the past was much better than now. Music was predominantly influenced by the cultures, and nowadays cultures are being merged heavily due to globalizations, music is also changed. Moreover who has time and patience to enjoy the traditional music.

@Seema Syed
Cultures was always mixed. Most of the greatest human achievements are nothing more but the results of different cultural interactions.
