Doin it Again 1990
Jammin’ in New York – 1992
Let’s expand the discussion slightly: What has really happened with the feminist movement? What went wrong? Commercialization has gradually transformed the feminist movement to another soap opera TV show. Organizing gigs and live events with thousands of sponsors has of course nothing to do with protesting and claiming rights. “I have to agree with most of the feminist philosophy” says Carlin. I would say “I have to agree with it at 100%” but the way most of the feminist organizations act today has nothing to do with fighting for rights as they are reluctant to identify the root of the problem. Let’s be frank, such a popular movement It could not have gone unnoticed by the interests of the big businesses and the ruling class. Consequently, pop bands have been created filled up with low skilled musicians who were singing “in the name of equality”. So most of the people can imagine that feminism has succeeded “woomen are equals now as long as we have female pop stars”. Nevertheless the reality is really different to what the media portrait. Do these overpaid multimillionaires artists really care about feminism? Would they have become famous if they were not slim and sexually attractive? I agree that the position of the women in the society has significantly improved but can a wooman who her body line does not follow the western standards pursue a career in the music industry? (Check this article, this and this). As we see, sexism still keeps well in the west (not to mention how appalling are the levels in the East), but what the so called “feminists” are doing today? Nothing but keep on pushing everyone not to say words that sound demeaning in the imagination of some disillusioned individuals ignoring completely the root of the problem which is one, monetarism and social conservatism. Similarly racism cannot be extinct by simply banning offensive words. Even if we stop using them, those who want to insult people who belong to a different race will find others.
Jammin’ in New York: George Carlin has a unique sarcastic way of outlining problems that exist in our society criticizing every form of ignorance and apathy in a thought provoking manner. This show (personally I think it is even better than the previous) is mostly focused on the Gulf War, local drinking water and the first George Bush, how aggressive the U$A foreign policy is and how willing to wage war against non-whites. “This country is only 200 years old and we had 10 major wars” while all the money go to military services (buying weapons…) instead of investing in health, education and general social improvement. In fact, Carlin appears to be very much critical for almost everything that happens in U$A but I should mention that U$A is not an isolated case of social conservatism and military aggression. 12 years have passed since Carlin was saying “that’s our new job in the world, bombing brown people” and it seems like it was only yesterday, yet, so much apropos! Not only nothing has changed 12 years later (more wars, more destructions, more starvation and poverty), not only the progress we have seen is insignificant but we are calling to face another threat, the consequences of ruling class’s greed, one of the most serious financial crisis in the recent history or maybe, and hopefully, the end of capitalism! “The system is beginning to collapse, the whole social structure is going to collapse” he stated, and in fact, we see it happening today!!!
Well done George Carlin for once again. Well said!!!
