Toilet artThe owner of this horn-shaped men’s toilet (in a pub in Freibourg, Germany) has received complaints by insulted musicians customers. To my mind this is an impressive work of art that could be appropriate for a modern art exhibition or Biennale but it seems like it is deemed as an insult by some musicians. However, I as a musician opposed to discrimination against artists, find it really interesting because obviously the designer’s intent was not to provoke or insult.

I would not be mistaken to assume that those who complained were classical musicians, who are known for their “purism”. I remember my old classical guitar teacher who used to tell me: “What are you listening to? David Bowie and Guns n Roses? These are just worthless little songs” and “The term classical music is incorrect, it should be called serious music!”. As if the folk, jazz, rock etc were non-serious, worthless music….

I personally find this toilet absolutely hilarious and a very clever and artistic way to attract attention to the pub. I don’t see it as an insult towards musicians. I don’t like any kind of art being controlled by any form of “political correctness” . There are no limits in arts and satire, as there are no limits in thinking. We shouldn’t be that much afraid of something that looks different. Puritanism… no way!!!

I agree…For me it’s just an art. I don’t think the owner has an intention to degrade musicians.

i think it is ironic that when Duchamp took a urinal and inverted it and called it a work of art (the famous “Fountain” ), it was hailed as the next big art movement.

But when an artist’s instrument is displayed in a toilet, there is discomfort.

    why the double standards?

i personally think it should be left to the owners to design their own toilets. if you have a problem with it, go piss somewhere else!

I agree, I don’t think it’s an insult, but maybe they think that he’s saying instruments are/music is only worth pissing on.
